VMWare 8.0 problems with Ubuntu 12.04

I've been trying out VMWare which seems a very competent multi-platform virtualisation tool.

Specifically I was trying to use VMPlayer with Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop (64-bit edition) and I ran into trouble building the network drivers.

Well this solution did the trick nicely. Follow these excellent instructions (login as root, or add sudo to the beginning of each command) and all will be well:
